Lollar Family circa 1913It’s that time of the year when I spend four to six weeks doing family history research, which takes nearly every minute of my spare time (nights and weekends). I normally start in mid-December, but this year I’m running a little behind because I’m trying to learn a new Macintosh genealogy program, iFamily for Tiger. It will be extremely painful, if not impossible, to migrate from my favorite genealogy software, Legacy; and I may fire up my old Dell Latitude (800 mhz. Pentium III) to do the job with Legacy again this year. It’s tough to beat!

Anyway, I may post a few quotes or links here at The Thin Edge, but don’t expect anything more till middle or late February. If you’re new to my blog, I could heartily recommend browsing Categorized Edginess—my article archives, arranged by category. Thanks for stopping by!

Image © Brett FernauI spent hours last night composing a new blog entry regarding the first chapter of Total Church, but lost the entire thing due to a computer malfunction (an extremely rare occurrence on my Macintosh). Rather than write the entry in a text editor, like I normally do, I made the mistake of trusting the online blog editor in WordPress. Never again! Even though it's supposed to save the post every sixty seconds or so, it failed miserably and now I am extremely frustrated that I have to recreate the article. Read more

Surprise!Technology can be frightening. In my efforts to build a photoblog for my son, I inadvertently deleted the main "index" page of my WordPress installation and inserted one from his PixelPost platform. This totally confused WordPress (and some of you who got a blank white screen), but I was oblivious until Tom Macklin e-mailed me ("Thanks, buddy!") and asked what happened to my blog.

My heart skipped a couple of beats as I thought back to last September when I lost my entire blog. Anyway, when I pulled up the index page, I realized right away that it was not WordPress-kosher, so then I scrambled to the WordPress.org website and (whew!) found the exact Read more

Clock School, Abercynon, Wales UKMost of us could really use some help with our computer skills, right? I’ve been wanting to take a refresher course on the basics of PhotoShop, so I began searching the net to see what I could find. Several people recommended taking a course at the local university, but I didn’t relish the snail’s pace of two hours per week over a nine-month course and it was very expensive.

There are lots of DVD-based training tools out there. These are definitely an advantage if you plan to use them multiple times or even share them with a friend, but they are pricey and you cannot always be confident of the quality until Read more

Yeah, I know this blog's been down for about 10 days or so. And I don't know exactly what happened. So, I'm starting over, which is particularly appropriate at this point in my ministry. I do have backups of my previous blog articles and I will post some of them when I get the time to do so. I'm really sorry to have lost touch with so many of you who check this blog on a regular basis. My main website was unaffected by these technical problems . . . just the blog. Thanks for your patience!
